Leather vs. Nylon

When searching for a new backpack, it’s important to choose one made of the right material. The most commonly used materials are leather & nylon, and with so much choice and so many styles to choose from, there are important considerations to keep in mind before buying: strength, style, care and most importantly price.

Leather is a natural material, which is celebrated for its strength, durability and timeless style. Leather can last a lifetime with the correct care and improves over time, aging beautifully to form a patina on its surface.

Caring for a leather backpack is very simple and also very worth doing to keep the leather supple and long-lasting. When leather goods are cared for, they can last decades. To remove dirt & dust build up, just use a clean damp cloth to gently wipe down the surface. It is always worth purchasing a leather conditioner, which should be applied in small amounts to add moisture to the material and prevent it from drying out and consequently cracking.

In terms of price, leather bags are to be seen as an investment; they have much more value for money than nylon bags as they last longer. Nylon bags have a much shorter lifespan and often need repairing or replacing after a few months.

Moving on to Nylon

Nylon is a cheap, synthetic material, which is lightweight and flexible. While it is generally the more inexpensive option, it isn’t as durable as leather and doesn’t last anywhere near as long. Wiping it down with a clean, damp cloth also easily cleans nylon & it doesn’t require any conditioning, on the other hand, it does stain very easily.

It is best to invest in a strong, reliable leather bag that is as stylish as it is practical. A classic leather backpack is perfect for school, college, work, and leisure. While nylon is a cheaper alternative, it doesn’t last as long and will soon need replacing while leather is here for the long run.
